Solo, also known as Autocross, is an event where one car at a time is driven over a course defined by orange pylons.
The course is designed primarily with safety in mind. Speeds rarely exceed 60mph for the fastest cars. A typical course time is around 45 seconds (for most cars). Driver ability and the car’s handling characteristics (as opposed to horsepower) are the key factors to setting quick times. The course is usually different at each event, so the ability to “read” the course also comes into play.
Times are determined by the use of an electronic timer triggered by photo-eyes at the start and finish lines. A two second penalty is assessed for each pylon hit. (See Down and Out Rule) The timer is accurate to 1/1000th of a second, and some classes see competition that close. The timer is also coupled to a computer that records the times to a database. Entrants typically get a minimum of 3 or 4 timed runs per event. Events with low attendance and/or shorter courses may provide even more timed runs.
There are about 40 different classes, ranging from daily-drivers with street tires to fully prepared race cars with slicks, in which to compete.
First time drivers compete against other first-timers in the Novice Class. In order to make things fair, the car is removed from the equation by the use of a multiplier known as the PAX Index. Read more about the PAX Index here:
There is a Pro Class know as Index1 that also uses the PAX Index to determine the winners. This class allows our more experienced drivers to compete against each other regardless of the car that they drive.
